We have an exciting year of projects ahead of us, and a number of events coming up this term to highlight for you.
As always, we are looking forward to our major projects for this term entering their most active phase, and having our fellows join us to work with Durham academics on these projects. Our major project 'Arts Engagement and Mental Health at Work' explores how engagement with the arts within a work environment can support social connectedness and improve mental health in the workplace. Our second major project this term, 'Surfacing Knowledge from Doctoral Research' works in partnership with the British Library to understand how artificial intelligence tools can make use of a digital repository of PhD theses from the UK to unearth new or forgotten knowledge that can be applied to current problems. Joining us to work on these projects we welcome fellows from Australia, Spain, Greece, and the USA and we are delighted to welcome them to Durham and support them in building long lasting links across the University.
Our activities beyond our major projects continue to grow, with our continuing project with The College of Fellows at Tübingen University bringing together people across both sites exploring the sense of belonging across an academic community. The 3rd Sir Harry Evans Fellow (Pete Mackenzie) will be joining the IAS in October, and will be presenting a seminar on his work early in term. We will also be welcoming the Director of the Forrest Research Institute from Perth, Australia, to sign a memorandum of understanding with the IAS to allow for future exchange and activities between two institutes passionate about supporting the interdisciplinary foundations of research in early career scholars. In November we will be welcoming Baroness Freeman to speak about her own experiences from producing science output for the BBC, to developing new routes for scientific publishing, to now working as a cross bench peer making sure science is understood at the heart of policy making.
Even with so much on this year, we are already starting to turn our attention to next year, and the IAS's 20th anniversary. It's exciting to be heading towards a third decade with the IAS so full of energy and we look forward to sharing our plans for marking this milestone with you soon.
