Clean Energy and Electricity Market Transformations, Pakistan’s Journey - Challenges & Ways Forward
27 January 2022, ,1-2pm
Muhammad Faisal Sharif, DEI Associate Fellow & Director (Projects) at PPIB, Ministry of Energy, Pakistan
The world economy is facing multifaceted challenges to balance its economic growth to meet the increasing energy demand but with less CO2 emissions transiting towards Low Carbon Economy (LCE). The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal-7 (SDG-7) sets the target to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all by 2030. The energy end use is the largest source (almost 75%)[1] of GHG emissions, making the energy transition crucial for achieving Net Zero targets. The transition towards LCE is even more complex and challenging for developing country due to number of economic, infrastructure, technical and institutional issues. Currently Pakistan’s Electricity Sector is entering into two transitions i.e. energy transition towards clean and green energy and electricity market transformation from “Single Buyer” to “Multiple Buyers Wholesale Market”. The country is targeting 60% share of renewable and clean energy in overall energy mix by 2030. The webinar will showcase country’s journey towards clean energy through implementation of various policies and massive reforms in energy sector, the multifaceted challenges being faced in the journey and possible ways forward.
