We warmly invite researchers at any stage of their career to join us for a practical workshop exploring collage making as a mode of inquiry which complements activities across the research process; from project design to data collection, analysis and dissemination. Hosted by the Durham Centre for Visual Arts and Culture (CVAC).
Thinking generatively through collage-making: A hands on workshop for academic researchers
The workshop will provide a brief overview of collage though art history, consider the different ways in which collage can be used within research and teaching and emphasize the value of collage making as a process of making sense which emphasizes contingency and relationality. Most of the workshop will be given over to creative process, offering an opportunity to think generatively about an aspect of your research, sifting, selecting and arranging material and visual fragments to create one or more collage compositions. Open ended prompts will be provided, but the idea is to offer space and time to think generatively through experimenting with collage as a mode of inquiry. The workshop space and time to think with an embodied creative process, as well as a chance to share emerging work with colleagues in a social and informal setting.
The timing of the workshop accounts for those who may wish to spend longer in the creative process; signing up does not require you to stay until the end. The invitation extends particularly to those who do not consider themselves to be creative or ‘arty’ - no artistic skill or experience is required. All materials will be provided, but you are welcome to bring any visual or material ephemera that is pertinent to your research or which sparks an interest that you wish to follow.
