Zurbarán Scholarship for the Study of Spanish Art

The Zurbarán Centre for Spanish and Latin American Art at Durham University invites applications for a doctoral scholarship in Spanish art-historical studies, commencing in the academic year 2021/22.

Summary

The scholarship has been created thanks to the generous support of the CEEH (Centro de Estudios Europa Hispánica) in association with ARTES and The Auckland Project. It supports innovative research focusing on Spanish art from the Golden Age to around 1900, including the reception of Spanish art in Britain. The successful candidate will enjoy privileged access to the Spanish Gallery at The Auckland Project in Bishop Auckland.

The scholarship is tenable for three years full-time (or five years part-time).

It is worth £20,000 per year over the course of three years (or £12,000 per year over a course of five years).

The University host department may be able to offer paid teaching and/or further research assistance opportunities.

Eligibility

Home and International students are welcome to apply.

In the case of Home students: the scholarship will cover tuition fees and an annual maintenance allowance.

In the case of international students: the scholarship covers most of their international rate tuition fees.

International students will need to provide proof that they are able to cover the remaining costs of their tuition fees and maintenance through their own funds. 

  • The candidate will typically hold a first-class or upper 2:1 undergraduate degree and an MA (completed or in progress) in History of Art or a related subject area at distinction or near-distinction level
  • Excellent reading knowledge of Spanish
  • Excellent competence in English (non-native English speakers should have taken a recognised English Language proficiency test within two years prior to their programme (see details here)
  • A high-quality research project on an aspect of Spanish art and visual culture from the early modern period to around 1900, which can be completed within 3 years. Projects on Latin American art will not be considered
  • An understanding of how the project fits with the research environment of the Zurbarán Centre

How to apply

  1. Apply for a course

    Submit an academic application to Durham University and state that you wish to be considered for the Zurbarán Scholarship when the form asks you to indicate how you intend to fund your studies.

  2. Submit a research proposal

    All applicants should submit a research proposal (no more than 2,000 words), which must set out:

    • the research question and issues that the project aims to address
    • the research context (past and present scholarship on the topic)
    • the contribution to knowledge and understanding of the project aims to make
    • the methodology/approach that will be employed
    • the resources and facilities that will be used and how they can be accessed
    • an initial bibliography

  3. Provide a sample of academic writing

    All applicants also need to provide a sample of academic writing (3000-5000 words). This may be a previous essay, MA dissertation excerpt or research paper.
