What did you study at Durham, and when did you graduate?

I completed an MSc in Business Analytics at Durham University, graduating in September 2023. The programme offered a rigorous blend of technical and business-focused modules, which I found both challenging and rewarding.

Why did you choose Durham University for your studies?

I chose Durham University primarily for its outstanding reputation and rich academic heritage. The Business Analytics course was particularly appealing because of its unique combination of computer science and business projects, which is quite rare.

I was also drawn to the innovative course design, which included practical study trips to US and real-world projects. Additionally, the collegiate system and the university’s long history made Durham a truly distinctive and vibrant place to study.

What kind of role or industry are you currently working in?

I am currently working as a Data Analyst. My role involves interpreting complex data sets and providing actionable insights to support business decision-making.

How did you find your current job, and what was the process like?

I secured my current position through my dissertation project, which involved a close collaboration with a local company. This partnership gave me valuable exposure to real business challenges and, after completing the project, I was offered an interview and subsequently hired. The transition from student to professional felt very natural thanks to this hands-on experience.

How did Durham support you in preparing for the UK job market? (e.g. careers services, workshops, employer events)

Durham provided a wide range of support for entering the UK job market. I benefited from open-access resources, dedicated career websites, and one-to-one consultations with career advisors. The university also organised employer days, workshops, and sessions on CV writing and interview preparation, all of which proved invaluable during my job search.

Did any specific experiences at Durham help you feel more confident transitioning into a working professional?

Absolutely. The dissertation project, in particular, allowed me to engage with real businesses and tackle practical challenges, which greatly boosted my confidence. I also developed essential soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, which have been crucial in my transition to the workplace and in adapting to professional environments.

Why did you apply for the Graduate visa, and how has it supported your career goals so far?

I applied for the Graduate visa as a way to bridge the gap between being a student and becoming a professional. Since I didn’t have full-time work experience before, the visa has given me the time and opportunity to grow, learn, and adapt to the UK job market. It has provided a valuable period for me to gain practical experience and become a more mature employee.

What was your experience of applying for and using the Graduate visa?

My experience with the Graduate visa process was generally positive. I waited for my final results before starting the application, which helped me plan my timeline carefully. The process was straightforward, and I was able to begin my full-time role soon after receiving my visa.

What advice would you give to other international students thinking about staying in the UK to work after graduation?

My main advice would be to plan ahead and remain flexible. The transition can be challenging, but confidence and a proactive approach make a big difference. Take advantage of all the support and resources available, and don’t hesitate to seek guidance from career advisors or alumni.

Would you recommend Durham and the Graduate visa route to others? If so, why?

I would definitely recommend Durham to prospective students. It is a beautiful, historic city—small but vibrant, and well-connected to major cities like Newcastle, London, Edinburgh, and Manchester. The peaceful atmosphere and welcoming community make it a wonderful place to live and study.

As for the Graduate visa, I think it is a great option for those looking to gain work experience in the UK after graduation. While everyone’s situation is different, this route can open up valuable opportunities and help you take the next step in your career.
