Summary

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation doctoral scholarships in the humanities and social sciences are the only one of its scope and stature in the country. Each year, the Foundation awards up to fifteen scholarships to Canadian and foreign doctoral candidates pursuing research related to one of its four founding themes. Trudeau scholars are outstanding students who are interested in growing in a multidisciplinary learning environment and in addressing important questions for Canada and the world.

Eligibility

Doctoral students already accepted into or in year one, two, or three of a full-time program in the humanities or social sciences whose work relates to one of the Foundations’ four themes:

  • Human Rights and Dignity
  • Responsible Citizenship
  • Canada and the World
  • People and their Natural Environment

Canadian citizens, whether at a Canadian or an international institution.

Up to 25% of Scholars in a given year may be non-Canadians (permanent residents or foreign nationals) enrolled in a doctoral program at a Canadian institution.

How to apply

  1. Apply for a course

    Submit an academic application to Durham University. Within this application should be a reference to an intention to apply for a Trudeau doctoral scholarship.

  2. Complete a scholarship application

    Submit an online scholarship application via the Trudeau Foundation webpage. You must then inform Durham University that you have submitted a scholarship application by emailing the Scholarships and Student Funding Office at scholarships.advice@durham.ac.uk.

    Please note: Although the application deadline on the Trudeau webpage is 5th January 2021 our internal deadline is 18th December 2020. This will allow us to process your application to meet Trudeau's deadlines and arrange a letter of nomination for you.

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation scholarships provide:

  • Membership in a community of other Scholars, Mentors, and Fellows, all of whom are leaders and change-makers in their respective disciplines and sectors
  • Leadership training from Mentors and Fellows
  • $40,000 per year for three years to cover tuition and reasonable living expenses
  • $20,000 per year for three years, as a research and travel allowance
