Celebrate Buddha’s Birthday at the Oriental Museum
The Oriental Museum is hosting a free community event on Saturday 18 May, from 12 - 4pm, to celebrate Buddha’s Birthday.
Also known as Vesak, Buddha’s Birthday is celebrated around the world and commemorates the birth of Buddha in around 563 BCE. Born a prince, Buddha went on to renounce his privileged royal life and become a holy man, ultimately reaching Enlightenment.

Two academics at Durham Law School, Professor Aileen McHarg and Dr Eleni Frantziou, have recently submitted written evidence to the House of Commons European Scrutiny Committee for its Inquiry into Retained EU Law. In their evidence, Prof McHarg and Dr Frantziou highlight the multifaceted character of retained EU law and its implications for the UK constitutional order, including the devolved administrations. They advise against any wholesale repeal or amendment of retained EU law.
