Post-offer Visit Day

Welcome to South College

A Message from the Principal:

Many congratulations on your offer to study at Durham. The University isProfessor Tim Luckhurst among the best in the world and, in addition to its academic excellence, Durham is, of course, a collegiate university.

Colleges are so much more than halls of residence. They are friendly, supportive human-scale communities within the wider university. When you arrive in Durham, your college will welcome you and make you feel at home. Students and staff will help you to find your feet and provide opportunities for you to get involved in a huge range of activities.

South College is a ready-made family of people from different countries and backgrounds. Here, you will meet students who are studying every subject taught at the University and make friendships that will last a lifetime.

Your college will play a key part in looking after your wellbeing. And it will help you to find your strengths and develop skills and interests. South College will help you to explore sport, theatre, music and volunteering, and enjoy the outstanding social life that makes Durham such a special university.

As a new college with big ambitions, South has outstanding accommodation. It also has fantastic sports teams and student societies. Our formal dinners set a standard of stylish but relaxed excellence.

And our character is based on ideas expressed in our college motto: "Libertas, aequalitas, civitas totius mundi". In English this means "freedom, equality and global citizenship". Freedom refers to Durham University's commitment to freedom of thought, speech and debate. Equality emphasises South College's commitment to inclusion and diversity. Global citizenship stresses our determination to welcome students from all countries and continents and our concern for the future of our planet.
