St Cuthbert’s Society Bursaries Fund Information Page

St Cuthbert’s Society will award four bursaries worth £1500 each to students entering the College in the 2022-2023 academic year. 


Detail


Four bursaries will be awarded per year to incoming full-time, undergraduate home students from all disciplines.  The bursaries are intended to support St Cuthbert’s Society students from less affluent economic backgrounds in the UK who have a demonstrable financial need.  The purpose of the bursary is to support living costs and to enable students to participate fully in the life of the college, the JCR and the wider student experience. 


Each bursary will be paid in three termly instalments of £500. Bursaries can be used as either a maintenance grant towards living costs or payment towards accommodation fees. As each bursary is a grant, and not a loan, they do not need to be repaid.


Eligibility


Level of Study: Undergraduate
Year of Entry: New Undergraduate home students for the academic year 2022-2023
Mode of Study: Full-time


Additional notes: 


Preference may be given to incoming students from the North East. 
Other scholarship awards may be taken into account when considering allocation of bursaries.
The intention is to award bursaries to one applicant from each faculty, depending on the range of applications. 


Duration


Bursaries will be available for a student’s first year of study only. 


How to apply:


Students who have been assessed by Student Finance England (or equivalent) will be contacted by the college in October 2022 and invited to apply.  
If you are invited to apply for a bursary, submit an application to St Cuthbert’s Society by email (cuthberts.ug-admissions@durham.ac.uk) consisting of a personal statement of not more than 500 words describing how your personal circumstances make you eligible for this award, including how the bursary would help you to study at Durham University and at St Cuthbert’s Society. 
Please address applications to the Principal of St Cuthbert’s Society, Professor Tammi Walker. The deadline for submitting applications will be given on the invitation to apply.


Selection Process


All eligible applications for the Bursaries Fund will be considered on the basis of their personal statement and academic status by a panel of College Officers of St Cuthbert’s Society. The financial and personal information provided by the University will be treated in confidence by members of the selection panel. 
Additional notes:
Other scholarship awards may be taken into account when considering scholarship allocation. 
Bursaries will not be made available to successful applicants until they have fully enrolled.

Note:
  ‘Home Students’ are students who are charged the home tuition fee of up to £9,250 and who have been classed by Student Finance England (or equivalent) as home students.  These students may have been classed by the University as European students. Students who have been classed by Student Finance England (or equivalent) as home students but who have been classed by the University as Overseas students are not eligible to receive the Durham Grant.
  ‘Financial need’ is based on a household income assessment as conducted by Student Finance England and defined as household income up to £35,000 as determined by Student Finance England.
