It is with great sadness that we share the news of Nick’s passing earlier this year, following illness with pancreatic cancer. Nick lived life to the full till the end, delighting in watching his grandson grow, continuing his charitable work and doing five pod casts about his life assisted by his daughters.

Nick arrived at St John’s College, Durham, in 1975 He threw himself into college life and was instrumental in getting the bar off the ground or was it underground in one of the college cellars. Nick was one the elite sportsmen of his generation. He captained both the University hockey and cricket teams with much success.

After graduating in 1978, Nick completed a PGCE at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, narrowly missing out on a cricket Blue due to injury. He spent 24 years as a teacher at Uppingham and Haileybury before become director of the Cricket Foundation at Lord’s He launched Chance to Shine, a national programme that reintroduced cricket into state schools. He also founded Aureus Social Ventures, supporting charities and social enterprises.

A lifelong cricketer, Nick played for Hoddesdon Cricket Club for over 50 years, later chairing the club and serving on the MCC committee. He gave his time generously to causes he believed in and remained active in charitable work throughout his life.

His funeral in Fladbury was beautifully led by his brother Andrew, also a Johnian, attended by 100 invited guests including several from his Durham days. Nick is survived by his wife Carole and daughters Jo and Amy.
