We are ranked 8th in the prestigious QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023. 

The rankings, announced in March 2023 assessed over 18,300 subjects from 1,597 institutions across the world, based on academic and employer reputation, citations per academic paper, impact and quality of research and international research collaboration factors.   

Our new ranking of 8th in the world and 3rd in the UK is a jump up from our previous ranking in 2022 of 13th in the world.

Durham is consistently ranked as one of the world’s leading universities. It is ranked 92nd in the QS World University Rankings 2023, 6th in the Guardian University Guide 2023 and Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023, and The Complete University Guide 2022. Durham is also regularly ranked in the top ten universities in the UK. 

One of the largest in the UK, the Classics and Ancient History Department not only ranks 8th in the 2023 QS World University Rankings by subject (and 3rd in the UK) but was the highest-ranked department in the University for employer reputation, with a score of 82.5.

Our graduates have gone on to careers in computing, civil service, gold dealing, insurance, journalism, law, accountancy, public relations and the theatre. We’re confident that our work brings the relevance and importance of Classics to a wider audience and our engagement with partners outside academia demonstrates the continued impact of Classics on people’s lives today.
