Congratulations and Welcome to the Department of Computer Science

head of department, matthew, johnson

Congratulations on gaining a place to study Computer Science in Durham! You are joining us at such an exciting time.

This is a really amazing time to join us and take your interest in Computer Science further.  At Durham we are growing our Department and the opportunities this affords to students.

And it’s an exciting time for the discipline - with graduates being much in demand and pioneering research covering some key topics of our time.

I’d like to warmly welcome you to both Durham, and to being a Computer Scientist. Enjoy your studies, enjoy the many other activities that are on offer at University, and enjoy Durham!

Studying computer science at Durham opens up so many opportunities, whether it's the chance to learn and explore a wide range of aspects from computer science or take part in any sort of society or sport you want, Durham really has it all. My advice is don't be afraid to try out things as Durham and our department is very supportive. From trying a new sport with college or taking part in DurHack as a first year, something I did and learnt a lot from, trying out a bunch of things will make your experience of studying at Durham really nice.

Your first week in Durham – University Induction Week Events Timetable

The Timetable has been designed so College events don’t clash with any of your academic departmental events, but offer you lots of opportunities to meet your fellow Freshers, find your way around and settle into student life.

To help you keep track of where you need to be, and what you need to do during your first busy days at university, in your College and your Department, we have created a day-by-day University Induction Planner. This should help you to plan your schedule, so you don't miss anything - from being issued with your Campus Card or meeting the staff in your Department, to trying out for a sports team or joining a student society.
