Congratulations and Welcome to the Department of Computer Science

head of department, matthew, johnsonCongratulations on gaining a place at Computer Science! You are joining Durham Computer Science at such an exciting time.

This is a really exciting time to be studying Computer Science. At Durham we are growing our Department and the opportunities this affords to students.

It’s also an exciting time for Computer Science as a discipline - with graduates being much in demand and research in Computer Science covering some key topics of our time.

I’d like to warmly welcome you to both Durham, and to being a Computer Scientist. Enjoy your studies, enjoy the many other activities that are on offer at University, and enjoy Durham!

Professor Matthew Johnson

University student
From CompSoc and DUWiT (Durham University Women in Tech), to a student society for pretty much anything you can imagine, Durham has something for everyone. You’ll be presented with some amazing opportunities during your time here, so make the most of them and throw yourself into university life! In terms of the course, my one piece of advice is to make the most of the support on offer, whether that be your lecturers, practical demonstrators, or fellow students. We have a great community in the department so everyone is always more than happy to help!

Your first week in Durham – University Induction Week Events Timetable

The Timetable has been designed so College events don’t clash with any of your academic departmental events, but offer you lots of opportunities to meet your fellow Freshers, find your way around and settle into student life.

To help you keep track of where you need to be, and what you need to do during your first busy days at university, in your College and your Department, we have created a day-by-day University Induction Planner. This should help you to plan your schedule, so you don't miss anything - from being issued with your Campus Card or meeting the staff in your Department, to trying out for a sports team or joining a student society.
