Dr Murat Ostok's Biography

I am a lecturer in the Department of Educational Research, and a fellow in the Institute for Social Futures at Lancaster University.  In broader terms, my research interests concern sociology of knowledge, with a theoretical and practical commitment to social justice. My research explores what learning means in the digital age and analyses collective pedagogies in digital spaces. To be more specific, I am interested in understanding the complex interplay among learners and the context in which learning occurs within the framework of sociopsychology. My scholarship is multidisciplinary in nature, situated at the intersection of critical pedagogy, sociology, psychology, and learning sciences. 

Currently, I am interested in "educational futures" as a research domain. I move away from studying what technology do for us and explore what technology do to us. I believe that without understanding how social, political, economic, and historical Discourses manifest themselves in social interactions, we cannot understand why and how the way that we learn is transformed by digital technologies. In particular, I am interested in understanding the ways that sociocultural elements inherent in applications of digital education operate to marginalise students who fall outside the ideations of dominant ideology.
