Improving Schools Serving Disadvantaged Communities - The Role of Deficit Thinking

Professor Dominique Klein, Philipps-Universit├Ąt Marburg, Germany

This will be a virtual seminar using Zoom. Contact ed.research@durham.ac.uk for details about how to take part.

International research shows that schools that serve disadvantaged communities and have experienced "failing" often develop unfavorable, deficit-oriented perspectives on their own students and their families. As collective pattern of interpretation, deficit thinking often enters the organizational culture of the school and affects the school's ability to reflect on and change its own practices. In this presentation, I discuss how deficit-oriented school cultures develop and manifest themselves in school practices, and use data from research projects in Germany to show how collective deficit thinking is related to aspects of school improvement and leadership.
