Teaching Practice Placements

At Durham, we work closely with a range of schools across the North East. The Durham University Partnership is at the heart of our provision - our Strategic Management Group and our school partners are involved in developing our partnership to ensure you get the best opportunity to develop as a beginning teacher.

School-based training, in the form of the Teaching Practice Placements, is an important element of the programme.

The placements for Postgraduate programmes usually consist of a minimum of 120 days in school. For Undergraduates you can usually expect to be in school for at least 140 days across the three years of your programme.

Partnership Placement Models

  • In Primary Education, the partnership is arranged in a Cluster structure. A Lead School (School Training Centre) works with a selection of schools to host a group of Primary Trainees. This is an established and successful model which provides excellent support for our students.
  • In Secondary Education, the partnership is arranged with a subject focus. A POD School (Professional Opportunities and Development Centre) supports subject-specific professional input and placements are arranged across a range of schools across the North East.

In both of our models, you will be supported by both a University Tutor and a school-based Mentor. Our close partnerships give you the opportunity to work with expert practitioners in the classroom in addition to expert Teacher Educators in the University.
