Norman Nicholson’s poetry collection, Sea To The West (1981), meditates on the changing landscape over time, contemplating the history of Cumbria and the trajectory of its future. Laura’s lecture will explore how the poems in the collection deal with these issues in light of the commentary offered by Nicholson in his autobiography, Wednesday Early Closing (1975).
PhD researcher, Durham University
Laura studied for her BA in English Literature at St John’s College, University of Cambridge, and graduated in 2017. She then moved to Durham for her MA study and has also worked part-time in the Pro-Vice-Chancellor’s Office (Colleges and Student Experience) since mid-2018. Laura’s research interests focus mainly on Norman Nicholson’s poetry and prose; ecocriticism; landscapes; mountains; agriculture; provincialism and parochialism; nature and rural writing; and the Lake District.
