Registering for your programme and specific modules
Although the University asks you to register for modules on Durham University Online (Banner Self-Service), before this, the History department requires you to complete a separate module selection form to give your preferences for Level 1 History modules. We use a separate web-form for this because our allocation process is based on your preferences.
Please don't worry if you have already added them to Banner Self-Service; they can be amended if necessary and you don't need to let us know.
How do I go about selecting my History modules?
Step One: Please read all the information below carefully.
Step Two: Read the Preliminary Honours Handbook carefully. This handbook for first years will have been emailed to your university email address, and includes descriptions of all the History modules running this year. It is essential to help you select your preferences.
Step Three: Go to the Level 1 Module Options web-form and fill in your preferences. If you do not have the link to this form, please contact history.taughtprogrammes@durham.ac.uk. Please note that module allocation is not operated on a 'first-come, first-served' basis, but based on preferences, programme requirements and numbers. Please do take your time when selecting your preferences. The deadline for filling in the form is 9am, Wednesday 15 September 2021. If you make a mistake, don’t worry; just fill in the form again and we will use the latest version of your preferences. We cannot, however, guarantee that any submissions received after the deadline will be taken into account.
V100 Single Honours History students are also required to fill in the Making History Strand Choice Form which will be made available at a later date when strands are confirmed.
Step Four: Before Induction Week starts on Monday 27 September, we hope to email you with the list of History modules you have been allocated. At this point, when you know your allocated modules, you can add to or amend them on your banner self-service registration.

V100 Single Honours History
All first-year V100 students take five modules in total: Making History, plus four other modules (making up a total of 120 credits). As a Single Honours student you must choose:
o one module in Medieval history;
o one module in Early Modern history;
o one module in Late Modern history.
Please note: Making History is a compulsory module that all single honours students must take. As Making History offers topics or 'strands' to choose from, it can count for one of your medieval, early modern or modern choices. For the remaining four modules, you must ensure that you have at least one medieval, at least one early modern and at least one late modern module across the total five.
You may wish to take advantage of the breadth of study possible across the University by taking modules taught in other departments (called open modules or electives). V100 students in their first year can take one elective module alongside the remaining four modules in History, one of which must be Making History. Even if you are thinking about taking an elective module, you are advised to select the full complement of History modules when you fill in the web-form; a History module can be ‘dropped’ if necessary after your elective place is confirmed.
