Former Lord Chancellor returns to Durham
Durham Law School graduate Sir Robert Buckland KC MP returned to Durham on 18 November for a Durham Union Society debate on prison rehabilitation. Sir Robert was Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary and Durham’s first graduate to become a law officer. He received the Dean’s Award from Durham Law School and was joined by then Dean, Professor Thom Brooks. During the event and afterwards, Sir Robert spoke of his time in government and of his many happy memories at Durham University.
Crackdown on image-based sexual abuse influenced by Durham research
Professor Clare McGlynn from our Durham Law School, along with colleagues, has been carrying out research on image-based sexual abuse for a number of years and shown how the existing law fails victims with change needed.
Collaboration in Research and Education - Durham CSDLP at COP27
A COP27 side event hosted by Centre for Sustainable Development Law and Policy (CSDLP) about extending collaborative links with climate learners, including researchers, students, and civil society took place on 14 November 2022. The core of the event was the role of the Centre for Sustainable Development Law and Policy (CSDLP) in delivering lifelong literacy.
Professor Brooks thanked in Parliament for work on National Security Bill
On 18 October 2022, Shadow Home Office Minister Holly Lynch MP raised a point of order to thank Durham Law School’s Professor Thom Brooks, Chair in Law and Government, for his “invaluable assistance”. Professor Brooks is a Labour Party advisor on home affairs and justice who has worked on the Bill since its first reading in the House of Commons.

Government agrees to revise Life in the UK test, after evidence from Professor Thom Brooks
Professor Thom Brooks (Durham Law School) was invited by the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) Committee to propose an inquiry for the Committee to undertake, in competition with other leading figures in immigration law and policy. Brooks pitched an inquiry into the the uses and reform of the Life in the UK citizenship test, which he sat in 2009 before becoming a British citizen.
