Iran Protests

While The Islamic Republic has been rocked by protests before, notably in 2009, these protests appear different, led and inspired by women across the country and with demonstrations taking place not just in the main urban areas, but in rural areas too, often seen as bastions of support for the regime. Are we seeing a profound social and political shift in attitude towards the Islamic Republic and its legitimacy? How are the protests being reported on social media across Iran and the region? And how will the protests impact upon Iran’s regional presence at a time of profound instability in neighbouring Iraq and amid wider tensions in the Gulf and beyond?

Professor Clive Jones, Director of the Institute for Middle eastern and Islamic Studies and Chair in Regional Security of the Middle East in the School of Government and International Affairs (SGIA) will be leading a Round Table Discussion followed by a Q+A discussion.

Confirmed attendees include:

Professor Anoush Ehteshami, Professor of International Relations, School of Government & International Affairs at Durham University

Dr Marzieh Kouhi Esfahani, Assistant Professor in Middle East Studies, School of Government & International Affairs at Durham University

Mr Tom Walsh. PhD Student and IMEIS Officer, Durham University

Dr Hesam Forozan, Independent Scholar with a PhD from Durham University

The event takes place in person on Tuesday 8 November 2022 from 5.00pm - 6.30pm in Room TLC033 in the Teaching & Learning Centre, South Road, Durham University and light refreshments will be available after the talk.
