Make a difference, qualify as a social worker

The Durham Master of Social Work is a 21-month programme engaging students with the knowledge, skills and values that underpin social work practice with individuals, groups and communities.

Academic study is complemented by two practice placements with different service user groups. Practice experience to enable you to understand statutory interventions with children and families or ‘vulnerable adults’ is complemented by opportunities for innovative practice in the voluntary and independent sectors in areas such as family justice, homelessness, substance use, domestic violence, sexual exploitation, community interventions and self-advocacy.

With strong involvement of service users, carers and practice partners throughout the programme, the Master of Social Work provides strong foundations for practice in any field of social work.

Our approach to social work education reflects the connections between individuals, their families and communities. We are proud to offer students broad foundations for social work practice that go beyond contemporary concerns with single service user groups. Underpinned by the global definition of social work the MSW emphasises the connections between local and global issues in social work.

The MSW course offered an invaluable experience to me. Besides the skills and values gained throughout the course, I had the opportunity to undertake my first-year placement in Edinburgh. This allowed me to expand my knowledge on the Scottish policies and legislations and provided different insights into social work practice. The whole MSW course was certainly a nourishing and enriching journey that I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to pursue a career in a social care setting.

I came to Durham University with high expectations and I am pleased to say that these expectations were met and exceeded. During my studies I felt supported by the faculty, both during my time in the classroom and whilst on placement. The quality of the placements I have been on has enabled me to develop as a student Social Worker and I have now accepted a permanent role with a learning disabilities team.

Throughout the past 2 years I have developed my skills in social work and I am now looking forward to beginning my career as a Social Worker in children’s services this year. I have fond memories of my peers and staff members, despite a global pandemic happening halfway through my degree! Staff did all they could to help achieve grades I can be proud of, whether this be emotional support and encouragement or academic guidance and advice.

Studying and completing the MSW programme at Durham has been a rewarding and gratifying experience. The course provided me with opportunities to learn about different facets of the profession and gain knowledge from a vast array of fantastic lecturers and brilliant classmates. Whether it was help needed in academic assignments, placement-related issues or personal and emotional wellbeing-related matters, the teaching faculty was absolutely amazing in providing student support and guidance.
