Academia in the Streets: how tweedy professors helped an investigative journalist unmask a gang in the LA Sheriff's Department

Abstract
Journalists and academics are worlds apart. They write differently, they’re supported by distinct political economies, and they answer emails on very different timelines. But these two professions converge on a pursuit of truth, and they desperately depend on each other to do that work effectively. We’ll explore this symbiotic relationship through the lens of an ongoing story in modern-day Los Angeles: how violent, gang-like secret societies are running amok in the city’s law enforcement, and how academics and journalists helped each other sound the alarm.
