Why do we use punishment in the form of prisons in response to harm? What does carceral punishment do, and whose interests are served by it? Does carceral punishment produce justice, accountability, repair, or harm reduction? What do we want from a justice system? These are the questions explored in this collaboration. This joint seminar will take the form of a structured conversation between Catherine Besteman and Leo Hylton where they describe how they came to this collaborative work and how they are working to develop a shared vision of a restorative pathway to the abolition of prisons that could be enacted in their home state of Maine, USA.
