This event is delivered as part of the Durham URIs: Global research tackling global challenges events, and the Institute of Advanced Study is delighted to host a signature Research Showcase Event welcoming colleagues, students and members of the public to the IAS, where you can find out how to lead and get involved with large scale interdisciplinary projects and building international networks through hearing about the research we support.

The Institute of Advanced Study is a 
home for growing big ideas. We supportpromote and grow new and creative interdisciplinary ideas that transform our perspectives in challenging and provocative ways.


This Durham Global Week Signature event showcases several recent IAS Major projects including:

  • Exploring Arctic Soundscapes
    A project which combined world-leading expertise in Arctic and marine politics, cultures, ecologies, and ontologies with ongoing world-leading work in Music that explored the sonic invocation of environment.

  • Enabling Responsible Space Exploitation
    A project which brought together stakeholders from “space science” (notably, the space industry, physics and engineering, supply chain management, and ‘citizens’ (via applied social science and philosophy)) to discuss the implications of ‘democratising Responsible Space Exploitation space’ and to identify the opportunities, challenges and barriers to creating an environmentally, economically and socially sustainable space industry.

  • Opportunities in Pollution 
    A project which built a comprehensive multidisciplinary understanding of pollution by linking academic research across several departments in Durham, local companies, environmental and social organisations.
