Credibility assessments operationalize the enforcement of law’s heuristics distinguishing citizens from non-citizens.  They thus bring to the fore an expression of the rule of law that performs the solidarity of citizens, on the one hand.  On the other hand, the type of citizenship manifest by such assessments reflects a very particular enactment in tension or even contradiction with the very definition of the rule of law that seemingly provides the foundation for such exercises.  This paper will reflect on political theories of solidarity in the wake of work by Jürgen Habermas and Jodi Dean and propose new ways of reimagining our historical contexts to create more healthy solidarities.
