IHRR Annual Conference 2022

Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience (IHRR) Annual Workshop and Lectures

To support The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

12th & 13th October 2022

Ustinov Room, Van Mildert College and via Zoom

Before and After: Building Resilience to Manage Disasters and Save Lives

The Institute of Hazard Risk and Resilience holds an annual conference every year, which runs in conjunction with The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

This year, the conference theme tackles the vital issue of what governments and institutions need to do before and after disasters. What more should be done in the planning process to build capacity and resilience? What more can be improved in the response to disasters that will help to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those affected?

We will bring together a range of perspectives from across disciplines to address multiple hazards, their associated risks and discuss how to plan for a resilient future. We will consider multiple forms of resilience building – including hazard mapping, spatial planning, early warning systems and policy change – as well as opportunities to improve the initial emergency response and subsequent rebuilding of communities and infrastructure.

Keynote lectures will be given by:

  • David Shukman, former science editor, BBC News
  • Colin McQuistan, Practical Action
  • Apiniti Jotisankasa, Kasetsart University, Thailand

The event will take place in the Ustinov Room in Van Mildert College (numbers are limited so it will be first come, first served).
