Hanna Ruszczyk: “Social justice and environmental sustainability must be at the heart of climate related relocation efforts”, 19 May 2022 E-letter, Science

Journal article of the month: Rahman M F, Kuhl L, Ruszczyk H, Nadiruzzaman MD, Warner J, Krause D and Baldwin A (2022) “Social justice and environmental sustainability must be at the heart of climate related relocation efforts”, 19 May 2022 E-letter, Science

Science's special issue 'Climate Induced Relocation' called for "preparing destination regions to be migrant friendly, incorporating design and decision support into retreat planning", underscored the need for transformation adaption and included models such as "migrant friendly climate-resilient cities". Relocation is a topic of immense importance for policy and planning, but we note with concern that the presented transformational adaptation propositions are being taken up in uncritical ways. Instead, what is needed are policies that centre social justice and environmental sustainability in order to ensure that relocation is adaptive rather than maladaptive.
