Intellectual Property and 'The Image'

In this two-part workshop, we'll cover an introduction to copyright law, as applied to visual materials, across analogue and digital forms, from basic principles, how to use and attribute images and their derivatives, how to protect our own materials from conception to commercialisation, and AI-related issues for images in the digital world.

These sessions are suitable for people without any background in Law, but will also provide worthwhile interest and insights for law specialists.

Part 1: Dr Van Anh Le:

  1. Subject matters of copyright
  2. Main copyright principles: Ideas/expression; Territory; Fixation
  3. Copyright infringement
  4. Fair use/fair dealing
  5. Moral rights

Part 2: Dr Angelia (Jia) Wang:

  1. Authorship/ownership
  2. Terms of protection
  3. The life cycle of commercialisation: registration; licensing through collective society; creative commons licenses
  4. AI-related issues: e.g.:
    • Can prompts be protected by copyright?
    • Can the style of artwork be protected?
    • Who can be the author/owner of an AI-generated artwork?
