Child having an eye test

On 17th April 2024 we will be hosting a training and networking day on Cerebral Visual Impairment or CVI at Durham University for professionals from the North East. We aim to build regional strength, expertise and coordination across health and education in the North East for children with CVI.

At the meeting, we want to showcase the expertise we have across clinical care, educational support and research on CVI. The connections and ideas generated at that meeting can hopefully lead to future joint initiatives and to improved continuity of care for the children and their families.

In the morning, we will hear from two fantastic keynote speakers:

Prof Cathy Williams, Associate Professor in Paediatric Ophthalmology at University of Bristol.

Cathy Williams

Prof Williams is leading studies to develop and evaluate services for children with CVI. She is also a Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist at Bristol Eye Hospital.

Professor Naomi Dale, Professor of Paediatric Neurodisability/Consultant Psychologist, Great Ormond Street Hospital

Naomi Dale

Professor Naomi Dale will share her 30 years of experience as Senior Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist at the Developmental Vision Clinic at Great Ormond Street Hospital. She also leads a world leading research group at University College London as Professor of Paediatric Neurodisability in Developmental Neuroscience investigating functional vision, developmental, neuropsychological, and psychosocial aspects of children with CVI.

We will further share expertise from across the regions and hear from local teams how they have developed their services for children with CVI.

In the afternoon, we plan round-table discussions on clinically relevant topics that might lead to practical recommendations and questions for further research like ‘What is an appropriate testing protocol for diagnosis of CVI?’, ‘How to best support children with CVI in school?’. We want people to go home with some specific pointers on what they can change in their daily practice and identify some challenges that we as a region want to work on in the next few years.

We are now fully booked however will be operating a waiting list. please use the same form to join this list.
