Stewart Ross, Chief Operating Officer

Responsibilities

The Chief Operating Officer has a critical role in making sure the physical and digital infrastructure is in place to support the delivery of the University Strategy, working collaboratively with colleagues across the University to ensure sustainability, continuous improvement and effectiveness within the professional services.

The role has overall responsibility for: Estates and Facilities, Computing and Information Services; Strategy Delivery Unit; Careers Service, Student and Academic Services; and the Colleges and Wider Student Experience directorates (incorporating the Student Support and Wellbeing Directorate and Experience Durham). 

Professional background and expertise

Stewart joined the University, as Chief Operating Officer, in August 2025 following senior management roles at the University of Leeds, London South Bank University and Royal Holloway, University of London. He has worked in a diverse range of functions across the professional services portfolio and has an impressive track record in the development of estate and digital plans and securing strategic funding for their delivery, as well as in the management and delivery of service effectiveness change.

In addition to his work in higher education, Stewart has also held a number of non-executive roles in education, charity sector and sport. He has chaired both the UK HE Commercial and Business Association and UK HE Sport Association. In 2025, Stewart was awarded an MBE for his contribution to sport.

Education and qualifications

Stewart has a BA in History and Philosophy from the University of Reading and Masters degree from Northumbria University.
