Applying for Accommodation – Postgraduates

2024 Entry

Accommodation from the University is available for around one third of our full time postgraduate community. All postgraduate bedrooms are single occupancy, except for our designated family accommodation.

Full Time: September Start Date

Steps to Take

• Accepted your academic offer to Durham
• Have completed the College Membership Application stating 'Yes' to being interested in University accommodation
• Receive communication with a link to the College Accommodation Application
• Confirm your facilities preferences

You will receive an accommodation offer, known as a Licence Agreement. A deadline date will be provided to accept the accommodation offer, and you must make a payment of Advanced Rent to secure the accommodation.

We make every attempt to provide accommodation in your preliminary allocated college where possible, however this may not be possible in all cases. You may be offered accommodation in another college where there is availability. If you are offered accommodation from another college and choose to accept it, your college membership will be transferred. This is because you must have membership at the college that you will live in.

Postgraduate Accommodation Guarantee

For the academic year 2024/25 we are guaranteeing an offer of single study accommodation from the University to the following students:

• All new international postgraduate students who are not currently living in the UK
• Previous student members continuing their studies at Durham University (i.e. undergraduate to postgraduate studies)
• Students from the International Study Centre (ISC)

To be eligible for this offer you must also:

• Commence full time study in September 2024
• Be living in accommodation offered by the University for the full academic year

Criteria for the guarantee is to complete the 'Steps to Take' outlined above by on Friday 28 June 2024. Those who qualify will receive an offer of accommodation from the University from July time. Offers will continue to be sent throughout the summer.

If you do not complete the criteria outlined by the deadline we cannot guarantee availability and you may not receive an accommodation offer from Durham. 

Accommodation Wait List

All applicants can still complete the 'Steps to Take' to confirm interest in accommodation offered by the University. Applicants who are not eligible for the guarantee will be placed on an accommodation wait list and be contacted once all offers are provided to those who met the guarantee. Accommodation will be offered to those on the waitlist on a first come first served basis when added to the list.  

Full Time: November - July Start Date

The process for applying for college accommodation is the same as full time September postgraduate students. Please refer to the 'Steps to Take' section above for further details.

Accommodation mid-year is provided where we have availability and this is not guaranteed. We only have a limited number of rooms available in colleges that may be able to provide accommodation. 

Part Time and Distance Learning Postgraduates

College accommodation is not available for part time and distance learning students. Some colleges may be able to provide short-term accommodation for their PT/DL student members. You should contact your allocated college directly to enquire.
