Our two Biological Sciences courses are:
The two courses follow an identical path for the first two years: a common first year, and a second-year following a biological sciences programme built of modules chosen to reflect your areas of interest. After this (subject to grades) it is possible to switch between the two degrees.
For students on the three-year BSC course, there is the option of a placement year. Students who spend a year in the industry are allocated a placement supervisor and are visited by their academic supervisor while they are away from Durham. Students who go on a placement change their registration to a "with placement" degree during level 2. There is no placement option for those taking the four-year MBiol Biosciences course. The decision to opt for a placement year is made during your second year of study.
Modules from the Department of Biosciences can be taken as part of a bespoke Natural Sciences degree (BSc or MSci) to fit with student interests. The Department of Biosciences contributes to Joint Honours degrees as part of the Natural Sciences programme.
