Dr Ciara Stewart spoke to the History Hack podcast about her work on female political engagement in nineteenth-century Ireland

Dr Stewart recently completed her PhD entitled 'Irish Women and Political Petitioning, c. 1870-1918' in the Department, and discussed some of these themes in the podcast episode from 9 July 2021. The discussion ranged around a variety of women's political organisations, including the Ladies' National Association for the Repeal of the Contagious Diseases Act, and the Ulster Women Unionist Council, and included some of Dr Stewart's findings regarding the role of petitioning and militancy in women's politics in nineteenth-century Ireland. There was also information around the backgrounds (both religious and economic) of the women involved in these political activities.
