Arabic Language 2B

This module is designed to consolidate students’ understanding of the morphology and syntax of Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) acquired during their first year of studying the language. It aims to enhance the student’s ability to use all aspects of the language (reading, writing, speaking and listening); to develop fluency in the reading of extended texts in MSA, and to consolidate translation skills both into and out of Arabic. The course materials used will also help to prepare the student for the year abroad.

Year Abroad

During the second year students will be introduced to a range of topics and skills that will be directly relevant to their preparation for their year abroad.

For this module, you will need to purchase:

  • Al-Kitaab fii ta’allum al-‘Arabiyya, Part 1, by K. Brustad, M. Al-Batal and A. Al-Tonsi, Washington, Georgetown University Press, 3rd edition, 2019
  • Hans Wehr, A Dictionary of Modern Written Arabic (Arabic-English), ed. by J. Milton Cowan (various editions)
  • Other materials will be supplied by the department as necessary

You may also find it helpful to purchase an Arabic reference grammar and an English-Arabic dictionary such as:

  • Mohammad T. Alhawary, Modern Standard Arabic Grammar: A learner’s guide, Wiley-Blackwell, 2011
  • The Concise Oxford English–Arabic Dictionary of Current Usage, ed. by N.S. Doniach, Oxford University Press, 1983 (various reprints)
