Objects of Desire: Making Sense of the Collections at the Oriental Museum

The module reflects upon the history, practice, development and reception of Ancient Egyptian, Islamic, South Asian, and East Asian art.  Module content includes a taught programme led by academics and museum curators.  The curriculum is grounded in the diverse collections at the Oriental Museum and as well as introducing the historic and contemporary works housed there, it covers topics such as the origins of the museum, collecting, cultural exchange, and Orientalism.  For their assignments students focus closely on one object of their choice from the collections, producing an audio-visual podcast based on that and also present and develop a paper on a more general theme that interests them.

Coordinator:  Dr Hazel Donkin
