Special Subject:  The Spanish Imaginary (20 credits) (Term 1)

Spain occupies a special place in the Western imagination that has little to do with the European nation that is Spain today. Adopting a flexible historical and geographical framework, and using specific case studies, we will study the constructions of ‘Spanishness’ from the early nineteenth century to the present day through art, architecture, visual culture, exhibitions projects and film.

What are the processes that are at work when European and North American artists, photographers, architects, composers, curators, collectors, film-makers and art writers translate ‘Spain’ into a variety of media intended for diverse audiences?
