Introducing department’s Decolonising the Curriculum Interns for 2025

The Department of Music is delighted to have appointed Amelia Awan and Harriet Nevin as its Decolonising the Curriculum Interns for 2025.
Amelia and Harriet take up this paid position to devise and pursue a project contributing to Durham University’s ongoing work in decolonising the curriculum.
Amelia is a first-year Music student passionate about musicology and research. She has particular interest in nationalist styles and enjoys learning more about new musical genres and contexts.
As a second-year Ancient History student, Harriet is fascinated by exploring the political impacts of a developing national consciousness, and of the rise of nationalism, throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The internship seeks to extend our work identifying and addressing the influences of coloniality in our curriculum, producing tangible impacts on our learning and teaching.
Among the forums for Amelia and Harriet to present their findings is the Decolonising the Curriculum Conference, a day of exploring decolonisation within Higher Education, taking place on 12 June 2025.
The work of Decolonising the Curriculum Interns across Arts and Humanities over several years can be explored here: https://www.durham.ac.uk/departments/academic/arts-humanities/about/decolonisation/.
