Vibrant student community

Both the Department of Music and Durham University are a welcoming and vibrant place for students from all over the world. Being one of the very best music departments in the UK, Durham's Department of Music prides itself on its ‘small department’ friendliness and sense of community. Most teaching is in small seminar groups, allowing students to get to know one another and their teachers.

International students benefits at Durham

As well as being a lively intellectual community, the Department provides social opportunities that bring together all its students and staff:

  • The Durham University Student Music, for example, provides more than 30 music societies thereby being one of the largest student music offerings of any UK university ranging from jazz, pop, and world music to orchestras and choirs.
  • The department also offers various facilities for socialising: There is a postgraduate common room in Divinity House, and a Postgraduate Hub nearby at 50 North Bailey.
  • The Music Department’s Research Forum takes place on Tuesday afternoons. We regularly welcome speakers in person and online, and also use this time for research related workshops and information sessions.
