Other English Language Qualifications

If for any reason the recognised English Language tests are not available to you, we also recognise a number of other qualifications as meeting our English language requirements. However, these are normally only acceptable for undergraduate study as they need to have been taken within 2 years of the start date of the programme you are applying for. 

Advanced Placement in English Language and Composition or English Literature and Composition

  • Grade or Score: 4 or above

Cambridge pre-U Global Perspectives and Research (UK only - 9777)

  • P2/M3 or above

Canadian Secondary School Diploma (Canadian nationals only) grade 12 English

  • 65% or above

European Baccalaureate English Language 1 and 2

  • 60% or above

European Baccalaureate English Language 3

  • 80% or above

GCE A-levels (AQA, CAIE, Edexcel, CCEA, OCR, WJEC, LRN)

  • Grade C or above in an essay based, humanities or social science subject from the following list: History, Philosophy, Government and Politics, English Language, English Literature, Geography, Religious Studies, Economics, Business Studies, Law, Sociology, Accounting, and Psychology. Modern or Classical Languages are not acceptable in meeting this requirement.

Herriot Watt Thailand Pre-Sessional (6 week and 12 week courses)

  • Band A  Overall 70% no score under 70%
  • Band B+ Overall 70% no score under 65% with writing at 70%
  • Band B  Overall 70% no score under 65%
  • Band C Overall 70% no score under 60%
  • Band E Overall 65% no score under 60%

Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) English Language

  • Grade 4 or above

Indian Standard XII English (Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, CBSE, Goa, ISC, Kerala, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu boards only)

UG entry

  • 80% or above at first attempt

PG Entry

  • 80% or above at first attempt + degree from a recognised English medium university

International Baccalaureate Standard or Higher level English

  • 5 or better

Malaysian SPM English component (administered by UCLES only - UCLES 1119)

  • Grade C

NECO/WAEC English from Nigeria and Ghana

  • Grade B3 or above. For Nigerian applicants WAEC is accepted as evidence of language proficiency with a time limit of 5 years.

Norwegian Vitnemål fra den Videregående Skole English

  • Grade 4 or above

Singapore Integrated Programme (SIPCAL)

  • Grade C or above in an essay based, humanities or social science subject from the following list: History, Philosophy, Government and Politics, English Language, English Literature, Geography, Religious Studies, Economics, Business Studies, Law and Sociology. Modern or Classical Languages are not acceptable in meeting this requirement.

Singapore Polytechnic Diploma and Advanced Diplomas

  • GPA 3.0 or above

South African National Senior School Certificate (candidates who have chosen English as their home language only)

  • Pass at 5+

USA High School Graduation Diploma English

  • Grade B (or 80-89%)

University of Warwick International Foundation Programme AES module

  • A minimum score of 65% (70% for Band B programmes)

Zimbabwe O level English

  • Grade C or above
