Recognised English Language Tests

The following are recognised English Language Tests: 

  • UKVI/SELT IELTS 
  • Non UKVI/SELT IELTS 
  • TOEFL iBT and TOEFL iBT Home edition 
  • Cambridge Proficiency (CPE) 
  • Cambridge Scale (CAE or CPE) 
  • Cambridge O level English Language (1119-Malaysia; 1120-Brunei; 1125 or 1126-Mauritius; 1128-Singapore and 1123 all other countries) 
  • Cambridge, Pearson or Oxford AQA iGCSE First Language English 
  • Cambridge, Pearson or Oxford AQA i GCSE English as a Second Language 
  • GCSE English Language 
  • Password Online (delivered through Durham University) 
  • Pearson Academic PTE 
  • Trinity ISE (revised) Language Tests taken in the UK on the same day 

Time limits 

You should have passed the test at the appropriate level for the course you want to apply for usually no longer than two years prior to the start of the course. 

Extended time limits 

This can be extended to two and a half years if you: 

Have been awarded an appropriately graded pass in one of: 

  • Cambridge O Level English Language 
  • GCSE English Language  
  • IGCSE English as a First Language 

AND 

Have then immediately continued to study appropriate level 3 qualifications (such as A Levels in any academic subjects, the IB, French Baccalaureate International Option, etc.) where the medium of instruction is entirely or predominately in English.  

This extension will NOT be applied to students who have completed iGCSE English as a Second Language.
