Status: ongoingDurham Chemistry is in the top 5 for chemistry research in the UK (REF 2014) and 1st in terms of research impact (REF 2014) and in the top 100 Chemistry departments internationally in the QS world rankings. The aim of this project is the refurbishment of Chemistry at Durham to provide laboratories comparable to our best UK competitors, allowing us to attract emerging or established researchers from elsewhere, help retain existing top staff and allowing us to carry out 4* research work whilst attracting the best students.
The project allocation for general building maintenance and for the refurbishment of teaching and research labs in the current Chemistry building on Lower Mountjoy is £15 million, whilst further consideration is given to plans for a new Chemistry building at Upper Mountjoy as part of the University Strategy and supporting the Estates Strategy/Masterplan.
