John Hemingway, Chief information Officer

The Chief Information Officer is responsible for ensuring our information services and systems support the delivery of our University Strategy. The role leads on implementing our Digital Strategy, supporting teaching, research, learning, administration, and the wider student experience.

Professional background and expertise

John joined Durham University in May 2019 from the University of Hull, where he was Director of ICT and directed a multi-million-pound programme to transform the University’s IT services, including their infrastructure, business systems and Wi-Fi.

John has worked in a range of industries during his career, from PwC to Gulf Oil, Codemasters to Sheffield Hallam University.

Education and qualifications

John holds an MSc in project management from Lancaster University and an MBA from the Open Business School. He is a Chartered Engineer and has extensive experience in leading change in complex organisations.
