Within the College, the Student Support Team is available in the Principal’s Office to help with matters such as illness, absence or serious adverse circumstances, distress or concern for yourself or another student, and financial worries.
The Student Support Team also works closely with specialist support services within the University to ensure that you receive the appropriate level of support throughout your studies. Examples of some of the services we work with are outlined below.
The Counselling Service offers a confidential service for those who are finding that their difficulties are hard to manage and/or affecting their studies. A team of Mental Health Advisors is also available within the Counselling Service.
If you have a recognised disability or are experiencing unexpected difficulties with your studies, please contact Disability Support to find out how they can help you. Their service is friendly and provides confidential support individually tailored to your specific needs.
The Student Immigration and Financial Support Office (SIFSO) provides advice for international students looking to Study at Durham and for those who are trying to extend their leave to remain in the UK to study and works with Departments across the University to ensure compliance with Home Office regulations.
The Careers Service is able to support you in researching your career ideas, developing skills for employment, applying for jobs and further study and meeting potential employers.
To help you manage the transition from home to university life and to encourage you to get the most out of your time at Durham, you will be assigned a College Mentor, who will act as your personal mentor throughout your first year. He/she will contact you prior to your arrival in Durham and you will meet up during Induction. Our mentor system is optional beyond the first year.
Under the leadership of the Vice-President (Welfare), our Junior Common Room (JCR) has a well-established Talk and Support team offering peer support to fellow students. The Vice-President (Welfare) can be a useful first point of contact, who can help to resolve minor issues or point you in the right direction for further advice. The JCR Talk and Support team also runs regular awareness campaigns and information sessions on wider student welfare issues.
