The relationship between people and material culture is always complex, and modern people's interaction with the archaeological record can make these relationships even more difficult to analyse. Professor Kersel's research focuses on how to investigate Early Bronze Age mortuary practices in Jordan in the face of both ancient and modern looting of cemeteries and tombs. Using a wide range of techniques from aerial surveys to ethnographic interviews, Professor Kersel hopes to shed light on society in the Dead Sea Plain during the Early Bronze Age whilst also protecting valuable archaeological sites.
