More about the speaker: 

  • Chi Onwurah was born and brought up mostly in the North East of England and studied Electrical Engineering at Imperial college, London in the mid-1980s. 
  • She has had an extensively career in industry working in hardware and software engineering for mobile telecommunications across three continents and became the Head of Telecoms Technology at Ofcom with a focus on broadband provision.
  • In 2010 she was elected an MP for Newcastle Upon Tyne Central and has held several front bench roles including shadow Cabinet Office Minister, Shadow Minister for Culture Media and Sport and as Shadow Minister for Industrial Strategy. She may be the only Chartered Engineer Member of Parliament. She has campaigned on gender issues.
  • In 2018, Chi Onwurah was added to the "Most Influential Women in UK IT" Hall of Fame by ‘Computer Weekly’ alongside Hannah Dee, Sarah Wood and Sherry Coutu and  in 2020 she was made an Honorary Fellow of the British Science Association.
