Leverhulme Early Career fellow Ninfea Cruttwell-Reade will give a brief introduction to her research project, ‘An exploration of North Indian rāgs in contemporary music composition.’ This project addresses issues of knowledge acquisition, appropriation, and creative conflict occasioned by the use of North Indian musical materials in contemporary music, and will culminate in the production of three rāg-focused chamber compositions. Drawing on some ideas from the edited volume Distributed Creativity: Collaboration and Improvisation in Contemporary Music (Clarke and Doffman 2017), Ninfea’s talk will include a discussion of conflicting understandings of ‘collaboration’ in practice-based pathways, together with an account of how the concept of collaboration has marked her compositional output to date.
