Abstract: This session will give an overview of research findings from two Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship projects in the Music Department that touch on the broad themes of music, memory, and emotion. The first is led by Dr Erin Johnson-Williams, who will explore the idea of the mission hymn as negotiating the memory of carceral experience in colonial concentration camps. The second is a project led by Dr Kelly Jakubowski on music-evoked autobiographical memories, which probes their everyday occurrence and common features, as well as variations across individuals and divergences from other types of autobiographical memories. An integrated discussion will follow the research presentations (chaired by Matthew McCullough), and the session will conclude with some general advice for PG students on applying for postdoctoral fellowships, with Q&A to follow.
