There is now widespread recognition that phenomena of most interest to social scientists - well-being, educational success, fairness, equality, poverty, and so on - are often value-laden. But there is less agreement on what is a responsible measurement in these cases. In this talk, we report on our ongoing effort to develop a participatory approach to well-being. This project involves a co-production of a theory and a measure of thriving for a national poverty charity Turn2Us. We describe the preliminary results and draw general lessons for how to combine different forms of expertise.
