On Sep 17, Dr. Jachyra delivered a talk to colleagues who are a part of the Matariki Network which includes colleagues from the University of Otago, Queens University, Tubingen University, Uppsala University, University of Western Australia and University of Western Cape.
In the talk, Dr. Jachyra spoke about the intersections of physical activity and mental health for neurodivergent children, youth and adults, highlighting the challenges this group experiences to be physically active and how to potentially support their mental health through physical activity. The talk drew on two recently published papers, about the experiences of physical activity with autistic adults (Perspectives and experiences of physical activity among autistic adults in middle adulthood - James McLeod, Martin Roderick, Mary Hanley, Deborah M Riby, Patrick Jachyra, 2025) and the experiences of physical education classes for autistic children and youth (Full article: Autistic adolescents and their experiences of physical education at school). The talk concluded with highlighting potential global approaches to better support their physical activity.
