Student Alan Edwards posing for a photograph in front of a fireplace

At the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences, we are proud to celebrate not just the academic achievements of our students, but also their incredible personal pursuits and contributions beyond the classroom! Final-year student Alan Edwards is a perfect example of this spirit in action.

On Wednesday, May 28th, Alan – a keen runner and soon-to-be PE teacher – took on an extraordinary challenge: running 100km (that’s 62 miles or nearly two and a half marathons back-to-back) in and around the city of Durham.

Starting at 7am and running through until around 8pm, Alan completed five 20km loops, spending a total of ten hours on the move. The run was part of a personal initiative to raise funds for Compass and St Cuthbert’s Hospice, two charities being supported by an event at South College, where Alan was based for the duration of his time at Durham. Inspired to contribute in his own way, Alan turned to what he knows best: running.

“After the first part I thought it wouldn’t be too bad, however towards the last ten miles it got difficult, so I had to dig deep,” Alan said. But dig deep he did. Alongside friends from Durham and his hometown of Middlesbrough, who took turns running with him throughout the day, Alan powered through the pain to complete the ultra-endurance feat.

To date, Alan has raised nearly £500 for his chosen charities – and donations remain open until the end of June.

What’s perhaps even more remarkable is that less than 24 hours after finishing his 100km, Alan was back on his feet racing for his running club, Billingham Marsh House.

Congratulations, Alan – you’ve inspired us all!
