Congratulations and Welcome to New Students

Variant 1

It’s a huge pleasure to welcome you to John Snow College.

At John Snow we combine our pride in Durham University’s traditions, such as gowned formal dinners and a wide variety of sports teams and societies, with a modern and dynamic outlook.  We pride ourselves on being a friendly and inclusive community.

Colleges are at the heart of Durham’s student experience. Alongside your academic studies you will have the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of activities run through the student-led Junior Common Room. We compete in 18 sports from football, netball and rugby to lacrosse, ultimate frisbee and futsal. In addition to sport, there are 30 societies to cater for all interests from arts to cooking and liberation societies to the Taylor Swift society. These all provide the opportunity to make friends from all backgrounds, develop new or existing skills and strengthen our college community of home and international students undergraduates and postgraduates.  The College also organises series of talks and seminars throughout the year on a variety of subjects aimed at personal development and fostering broader intellectual perspectives.

Being at university is an exciting time but many students experience occasions when they need support. The student support team and the JCR Welfare representatives have a huge amount of experience and are there for you when you need them.

Our aim is that each of you has a safe, happy, stimulating and successful experience during your time at John Snow College and that we enable you to achieve your full potential.

Welcome to John Snow! Being involved within our college community and JCR is one of the best experiences you can take away from your time at Durham, and at John Snow College our spirit and inclusivity make this easily accessible and a lot of fun! The JCR (Junior Common Room) is the undergraduate community in John Snow, for students studying here for their 3 or 4-year courses. It is a student-led organisation that is self-governed by a committee of elected students who each lead a different aspect of JCR life. Your first week in Durham – University Induction Week Events Timetable

The Timetable has been designed so College events don’t clash with any of your academic departmental events, but offer you lots of opportunities to meet your fellow Freshers, find your way around and settle into student life.

To help you keep track of where you need to be, and what you need to do during your first busy days at university, in your College and your Department, we have created a day-by-day University Induction Planner. This should help you to plan your schedule, so you don't miss anything - from being issued with your Campus Card or meeting the staff in your Department, to trying out for a sports team or joining a student society.
